What would it take to save our souls when we're already lost You could say we had it all You could say we had it all Make up your mind Was it nothing but a lie What would it take to save our souls when we're already lost You could say we had it all Make up your mind Don't make me say it twice Fall from grace in my arms always For this mistake we will fall always We're already lost Make up your mind Don't make me say, Don't make me say it twice Fall from grace in my arms always For this mistake we will fall always

Everyday you tell me don't worry But I still wait for you Give me a chance to make you feel strong again Give me a chance and I'll make you feel normal Keep it together Stop spinning you're out of control Keep it together Stop spinning you're out of it

The Rancho-Research Sessions 7”

In the words of Dennis Yudt:

Here are the first new Electro Group - Sacramento, CA’s finest proponent of blissed-out shoegaze - recordings in many a moon.

In speaking with the band, they revealed that these are tracks that didn’t quite fit alongside their forthcoming full-length. They explained that the band loved the tracks and wanted to do something with these orphans.

‘Orphans’ is a totally appropriate description of these two songs. Like orphans in real life, one must beat them into shape to get them to work. Also, they’re soooo cute! Look at those soot-covered rapscallions with their tattered threads and dented gruel cups. And such big eyes!

Having heard my share of Electro Group over the past 15-odd years, these two songs certainly are a departure from their beloved wall-of-electricity, a blanket of static that saturates and morphs sweet melodies of guitarist Tim’s plaintive choirboy vocals into sometimes harrowing territory.

On both tracks here, the feedback takes a hike, stealthily replaced by cello, viola and all sorts of cool electronics on the A-side ’Ranger’ - a song that demands to be listened to with headphones on in the dark. There’s a lot going on in its four-plus minutes; the sad resignation of the lyrics; Ian’s sublime bass line propelling and enhancing the melody; the layers of fantasia deep in the background; and a hook that is both naggingly familiar and elusive. Bee-you-tee-ful, as old people would say.

Departing even further from the Group-sound, ’Chomp’ hits the floor staggering out a guitar hook that connects-the-dots between spaghetti western, surf and a dang-near flamenco flourish with lyrics that I think are about me, especially the ’keep it together/stop spinning you’re out of control‘, which is basically about how every weekend comes to a halt around these parts. The verses are a Mobius-strip of spiky pop, not unlike Wire circa- Chairs Missing, like if M.C. Escher played a mean Strat.

Electro Group succeeds at keeping enough of their three personalities shining on both these tracks while pointing towards a way to a new sonic world that fits them just peachy. The most overtly psych tracks these kids have laid to wax.
